What Handbag Buyers Should Look for in Second-Hand Bag Purchases

Designer handbags have the power to bring a look together or make a statement on their own. With a thriving second-hand bag market, you can find the same beautiful bags you’d find in a mall display for less. However, you can also find counterfeit bags, bags in bad condition or even outright scams, especially when shopping online. Here’s how you can be a wise second-hand bag shopper:

Shop for Personal Style, Not Just Trends

When you’re shopping for second-hand designer handbags, you’re sure to find trendy items (especially with how fast TikTok trends move nowadays). However, you can often save money by finding that out-of-season bag that you absolutely love. Before buying a bag, take a moment to consider how often you’ll use it. Make sure you’re buying something that fits your personal style and lifestyle, not just the trend of the moment. This will ensure you’re getting the best bang for your buck!

Shop the Classics

One way to avoid falling into a trendy trap is to look for something timeless. Brands like Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton all have their own iconic bags that will never go out of style. If you’re new to buying second-hand bags, start with these staples, and add to your collection as you become more comfortable and familiar with designer brands. Over time, you’ll discover that you’ll gravitate towards a certain designer over another!

Check for Authenticity

If a deal looks too good to be true, it likely is. When you see one of these deals, talk to the seller about their authentication process. Ask for pictures if it’s an online seller. When shopping for a bag at a retail location, it’s easier to look over a bag yourself to confirm that it’s exactly what you’re looking for. These are some signs that you’re looking at a counterfeit product: uneven stitching and seams; bad quality lining and zippers; and a logo that’s a little blurry.

Examine the Condition

A pre-owned item will naturally have small scratches and scuffs, but you may not want a bag that has more than the usual wear and tear. Online, it can be difficult to detect signs of damage. Asking for additional pictures and analyzing seller reviews may be the best you can do. In person, however, you might be able to closely inspect the bag. Make sure to check zippers and clasps, as well as looking for loose threads, stains and tears. Only you can decide what condition is acceptable for you. If you really love a bag, the flaws may be a little easier to look past.
